A 2024 McKinsey & Company survey revealed that, despite the growing integration of AI, trust in companies protecting personal data has decreased globally. Specifically, there was a 3 percentage point drop in confidence that companies using AI will safeguard personal information.

1. Data Protection and Privacy in Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Environments


Latin American companies are opting for hybrid or multi-cloud architectures (combining Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure services), which offers flexibility but also introduces security complexities. Data proliferation is a challenge, as AI models are trained with enormous amounts of information. This massive reliance on data has led many websites to implement new restrictions to prevent data "scraping" for AI training, which has resulted in a reduction of data commons.


To address this, technology leaders must focus on:

  • Robust Data Governance: Implement policies that define who has access to data, how it is used, and where it is stored. This is crucial, as most organizational data still does not reside in the cloud, making its transfer costly and sometimes impractical.

  • Security-by-Design: Integrate security at every stage of the AI lifecycle, from data ingestion to model deployment. This includes the use of end-to-end encryption, sensitive data masking, and identity and access management (IAM) systems.

  • Federated Learning Models: Instead of centralizing all data in a single location, AI can be trained in a decentralized manner across multiple devices or servers, thereby protecting information privacy.


2. Transparency and Accountability


The opacity of AI algorithms, known as the "black box problem," is one of the biggest ethical concerns. Business leaders need to know why and how an AI made a certain decision to be able to trust it and justify it. 


The ability to understand the logic behind AI decisions is known as Explainable AI (XAI).


A 2024 McKinsey study showed that while most organizations identify the ethical risks of AI, mitigation efforts are still insufficient. For example, only 31% of companies that consider explainability a relevant risk are taking active steps to mitigate it.


To be transparent, organizations should:

  • Document Models: Maintain detailed records of the data used for training, testing methodologies, and decisions made during development.

  • Monitor Performance: Continuously evaluate AI models to detect biases, errors, and unexpected deviations. Stanford's Foundational Model Transparency Index (FMTI), for example, has revealed that, although transparency is improving, significant opacity still persists in areas such as data access and copyright status.


3. Combating Bias and Disinformation


A 2025 AI Index study revealed that, although many large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 and Claude 3 Sonnet have been designed to mitigate explicit biases, they can still exhibit implicit biases that reinforce racial and gender stereotypes. This is especially relevant in contexts such as hiring or financial risk management.

Additionally, generative AI has facilitated the creation of disinformation and "deepfakes." A Rest of World report documented 60 incidents of AI-generated electoral disinformation in 15 countries in 2024, including Mexico.


To mitigate these risks, the following should be considered:

  • Bias Audits: Conduct periodic evaluations to identify and correct biases in data and models.

  • Ethical Governance Frameworks: Establish internal committees or consult experts to oversee the development and implementation of AI, ensuring adherence to universal ethical principles.

  • Investment in Cybersecurity: AI-enabled cyberattacks, such as deepfakes and targeted phishing, are growing threats. Continuous investment is required to develop robust defenses that protect systems and data.
